Chinese Exporters Face More US Textile Restrictions

Chinese textile exporters are likely to face safeguard measures on additional products if the current round of Sino-US textile talks fails to reach agreement. The United States is due to make a decision on whether to set caps on imports of sweaters, robes, wool trousers and knit fabrics on October 1.

An another development, online bidding for next year’s quotas set by the European Union started yesterday; the process is set to last till Friday. Cao Xinyu, vice-chairman of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles said enterprises were carefully analyzing prices and prospects as they bid for 18 per cent of next year’s quotas.

EU Commission Approves Acquisition of Lynx by UPS

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of Lynx Express Limited (?Lynx?), a UK-based parcel delivery company, by UPS (UK Holding) Limited (?UPS UK?), the UK-based subsidiary of the US company United Parcel Service, which is active world-wide in delivery services. After examining the operation carefully, the Commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the EEA or any substantial part of it and has therefore approved the acquisition.

EU Requests Second WTO Arbitration on its Revised Proposal for the Banana Import Regime

The EU today submitted a request for a second arbitration on its proposal for a new import tariff for bananas from countries benefiting from Most Favoured Nation status. The Commission has carefully analyzed the award from the first arbitration. It is confident that its revised proposal for an import duty of ? 187/tonne for MFN suppliers and a tariff quota of 775,000 tonnes at zero duty for bananas originating in ACP countries maintains market access for MFN suppliers and an equivalent level of preference for ACP suppliers as the current regime. The intention remains to have a tariff only system in place on 1 January 2006.

Oracle Buys G-Log, Potential Top Slot in SCM

Oracle continues its buying spree, this time grabbing privately held G-Log, a $34M North American provider of Transportation Management System (TMS) applications. The deal, for an undisclosed amount, is expected to close in the fall 2005, and should have a significant impact on the market.

AMR Analysts concluded: “To take the No. 1 spot in SCM, Oracle must create the revenue. The sale of TMS requires an experienced team that can talk logistics and the ability to manage a complex selling environment. The problem is twofold: Oracle sales teams are in transition from the recent acquisitions of PeopleSoft, Retek, and most recently Siebel?all huge purchases that require a lot of resources. So far it has managed, but it has a lot to digest.”
