New German mail network to challenge Deutsche Post
published: cw 37, 2005 in Mergers & acquisitionsThe German publishing houses of Axel Springer, Georg von Holtzbrinck and WAZ are combining their activities on the market for postal services and, together with Rosalia AG (Luxembourg), are founding a joint company for nationwide mail distribution. Entrepreneur G?nter Thiel, the former CEO of Thiel Logistik AG, and most recently CEO of TNT Logistics Central & Eastern Europe, has been charged with creating and running the new company. On September 8, 2005, the four companies signed the joint venture contract, according to which each partner will hold a 25% stake in the new company.
Competition in the German mail market is set to get much tougher for Deutsche Post with this news that three of Germany?s largest publishers of newspapers are establishing a nationwide network which will come into full operation when the market is liberalized in 2008. Although liberalization will impact on all European post offices, DPWN has followed the most aggressive diversification strategy. Dutch postal operator TNT has come closest to building the same level of operations across the various mail, express and logistics sectors whilst French La Poste and UK Royal Mail have restricted their acquisitions to European parcels and express companies. Greater competition in the European postal market has been one of the driving forces for the transformation of the global logistics industry. It was this threat that led Deutsche Post World Net to push into foreign markets and into the neighbouring express and logistics sectors. The culmination of this strategy is likely to be the acquisition of UK based contract logistics provider Exel.
