FedEx margins leap in third quarter

FedEx has reported results for the third quarter of its financial year showing a growth in revenue of 9% to $8.00 billion up from $7.34 billion the previous year. It achieved operating income of $713 million, up 29% from $552 million, resulting in an operating margin of 8.9%.

Consolidation in Express, Logistics sectors continues unabated

The number of mergers and acquisitions undertaken by the largest players in the worldwide express, mail and logistics sectors has reached its highest level since its peak at the height of the ?dotcom? boom. This was just one of the findings of Transport Intelligence?s latest report ?Global Logistics Strategies 2006?. The annual survey of M&A activity indicated that following a slump in deal volumes in 2002, when numbers fell by 36%, the level of completed deals has risen steadily. However, the number is still well below 2000/1 levels.

DHL Global Mail Forms Joint Venture in Japan for Mail Services

DHL Global Mail, a unit of Deutsche Post World Net, has reached agreement with Yamato Holdings on a joint venture in Japan for mail services. The arrangement will offer a full range of direct marketing services, the company said. DHL Global Mail will hold 49 percent of the shares, and Yamato Holdings 51 percent.

RFID does not cause computer viruses

There is no evidence that radio frequency identification (RFID) tags can be used to corrupt computer databases or spread computer viruses, reports AIM Global, a trade association for automatic identification and mobility. AIM?s statement is in response to a technical paper entitled “Is Your Cat Infected with a Computer Virus?” delivered during a conference earlier this month in Pisa, Italy, that made those claims about the technology.
