Container throughput at China ports up 22.4% in first half of 2006
published: cw 33, 2006 in Logistics & ShippingChina?s major sea and river ports saw container throughput volumes during the first half of 2006 increase by 22.4 percent to just over 42 million TEU , and cargo tonnage by 18.4 percent to 2.2 billion tons, reports Chinese news agency, Xinhua.
The majority of the trade was done at seaports, with cargo volumes up 17.6 percent to 1.64 billion tons and containers up 21.4 percent to 39.3 million TEU. At river ports, cargo volumes were up 20.9 percent to 555.33 million tons, and container throughput up to 39.3 percent to 2.83 million TEU.
Shanghai handled the highest amount of cargo?up 11.6 percent to 227.12 million tons, and container volume up 17.5 percent to 10 million TEU.
Guangzhou handled 152.99 million tons of cargo, up 46.7 percent, and 3 million TEU, up 40.2 percent.
Tianjin port handled 126.4 million tons of cargo, up 6.1 percent, and Shenzhen port handled 8.3 million TEU, up 12.2 percent.
The Port of Rotterdam, in comparision, handled 186 million tons of cargo in the first half of 2006, up 1.1 percent from the same period in 2005. Container throughput was up 2 percent to 4.7 million TEU.
