Hyundai Fortune still afloat, but fire still raging
published: cw 12, 2006 in Logistics & ShippingFIREFIGHERS are still tackling the blaze which broke out on board the 5,551 TEU Hyundai Fortune earlier this week following an explosion in one of the containers on board off the coast of Yemen. The vessel has not sunk as we earlier reported.
A Hyundai spokesman told the Shipping Gazette that fire and salvage tugs were standing by the vessel, which was on its way from Singapore to Rotterdam.
The fire broke out at the stern of the ship and spread towards its accommodation block. The shipping line said one crewmember was injured. He and the others were evacuated.
The spokesman stressed that the priority was to bring the fire under control and then to tow the vessel to a nearby port for inspection and for the undamaged containers to be transferred to other vessels.
