Shanghai Port poised to exceed 20 million TEU in 2006

This is the highest volume recorded since its opening. Shanghai Port anticipates moving more than 20 million TEU in 2006, exceeding container throughput of 18 million TEU in 2005. The handling efficiency of quayside cranes at Yangshan Port has outperformed the average of the Shanghai terminals.
According to Chen Xuyuan, president of Shanghai International Port, the container throughput achieved by Yangshan Port between December 10th and 31st amounted to 128,000 TEU, or an average of 27 moves per hour by each quayside crane. Between January 1st and 25th, this has further improved to 30 moves per crane per hour, as a total of 169,000 TEU of containers was handled.
Shanghai Port handled 1.62 million TEU in January alone. This is up 14% from January last year. Waigaoqiao Phase II handled almost 20% of the total throughput. Meanwhile, Yangshan Phase I handled 10% (210000 TEU) in its second month of operation. Qindao Port had a container throughput of 586000 TEU in January, this is up 15% from January last year.
CMHI invested RMB 4.5 billion in Qingdao Qianwan Logistics Park. This includes the integral container terminal. Construction is underway and two container berths are scheduled for completion this year.
