André Toet (Maersk) to join Port of Rotterdam Authority board

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has appointed André Toet to succeed Pieter Struijs, who retires next year, as COO. Toet (43) is currently CEO for Central Europe at Maersk Line. He will join the Port Authority on 1 October and officially take over from Pieter Struijs on 1 January.

Appointment of new chief hints at problems at Maersk

For the first time in over 100 years, Maersk will recruit its Chief Executive from outside the company. The new head of the giant shipping and oil services company, A.P.Moller-Maersk, will be Nils Smedegaard Andersen, presently the head of the Danish brewer Carlsberg. He replaces Jess Soederberg who is leaving the company two years ahead of schedule.

DHL and Lufthansa in negotiations over joint-venture.

After a day of speculation in the European press, it appears to be true that DPWN/DHL and Lufthansa are engaged in advanced talks about forming a joint venture cargo airline. The reports state that the joint venture, which is provisionally called ‘NewCo’, will be a 50/50 split, offering both express parcel capability as well as conventional air freight capacity worldwide. Reports appear to agree that the joint venture will commence in 2009.

MOL Logistics opens regional HQ in Europe

MOL Logistics, a subsidiary of the Japanese shipping group, has announced that it has established a regional headquarters in The Netherlands. The move will reinforce the development and expansion of the company’s network in Europe and enhance its sales activities in Central and Eastern European countries and Russia, where it anticipates strong economic growth. It will also promote the company’s localisation efforts in Europe.
