Bookreview: New French book “The Advantages of Intermodal Transport in Logistics”
published: cw 37, 2007 in Book reviewsNowadays, mastering the intermodal techniques rewards those who take a logistics stance. French logistics expert and journilist Élie Le Du wrote a book about it.

The container, tightly bound to the intermodal process and usually only known as the Unit of Intermodal Transport (UIT) that makes possible the combination of different modes of transportation (road, railway, sea, canals/rivers, air), has now become a Unit of Intermodal Logistics (UIL) that augments the all-around performance in logistics, transportation, storage and handling.
Beyond the problem of container transportation, we now have to address that of intermodal strategies that combine successive modes of transportation with network load capacity, ports and airports, massive returns with empty loads due to world trade imbalances. The use of containers in the framework of intermodal transportation makes it necessary for the operators to devise logistics strategies that optimize their efficiency and costs, in order to keep the pace both in the fields of logistic transports and that of general economics. Faced with an intermodal landscape experiencing renewed mutation, and with the economics stakes involved, this book will be of help to:
+ the service providers who develop logistic and transportation strategies, and the corresponding corporate decision-makers ;
+ the future executives soon responsible for the choices made by their company.
+ the professionals, thanks to the practical aspects useful both for immediate action and prospective investigations ;
+ those who devise and operate the infrastructures (ports, logistic platforms, specialized terminal equipments, etc.), and thus need to take the intermodal parameter into account ;
+ the professors and students, thanks to the careful expounding not only of the untold backstage of the origins, but also of the assets and liabilities ;
+ the civil servants responsible for the transportation policy.
