André Toet (Maersk) to join Port of Rotterdam Authority board
published: cw 27, 2007 in Mergers & acquisitionsThe Port of Rotterdam Authority has appointed André Toet to succeed Pieter Struijs, who retires next year, as COO. Toet (43) is currently CEO for Central Europe at Maersk Line. He will join the Port Authority on 1 October and officially take over from Pieter Struijs on 1 January.
Despite his age, André Toet already has a long career in shipping and logistics management behind him. After leaving the Maritime Institute ‘Willem Barentz’ (higher technical education level), he worked for a number of years on the bridge as mate and nautical officer with shipping company Nedlloyd. In the late 1980s, he switched to logistics management with the same company. In the mid-nineties, Toet spent four years in Bangkok and Hong Kong, working for Nedlloyd. In 1998, he returned to Rotterdam, where he was responsible for Europe from 2000 onwards, first within P&O Nedlloyd and then for AP Möller Maersk, following the takeover.
Pieter Struijs will be 65 in April 2008. He will then have been on the board of the Port of Rotterdam Authority for almost eighteen years. Struijs’s main area of concern has always been the maritime side of the port. In the 1990s, for example, he was harbour master of Rotterdam and he is now responsible for the construction and maintenance of port infrastructure, such as roads and quay walls, but also for the celebrated traffic guidance system, by means of which all shipping is coordinated. After 11 September 2001, security in the port complex became a main priority for him. The environment also forms part of his portfolio, from cleaning up the Rhine by making agreements on halting the discharge of waste, to the topic of air quality. Struijs enjoys international regard through his presidency of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (2003-2005). Locally, he has some claim to fame as chair of the Supervisory Board of Sparta football club.
With a view to Struijs’s pending retirement, the Port Authority started to look for a successor in good time. As it turned out, this was a relatively quick process, so that there will be an adequate induction period and plenty of time to transfer dossiers with the necessary care. André Toet will start work at the Port Authority on 1 October of this year, and will officially take over as COO on 1 January. Pieter Struijs will then continue to handle a number of important dossiers for the Port Authority until he leaves the company in April.
The move is interesting because Toet was responsible as CEO Central Europe for the main part of the P&O Nedlloyd integration in Europe. The failure of this integrations has led to more changes in the board of AP Moller Maersk.
