NYK to consolidate Japanese logistics operations

Japanese shipping and logistics group NYK has announced it will consolidate its two Japan logistics subsidiaries, JIT Corporation and NYK Logistics Japan Co. Ltd., under the sole name of NYK Logistics Japan Co. Ltd., which will remain headquartered in Tokyo.

CEO succeeds in second attempt to take over EGL

Houston-based supply chain management company EGL Inc (Eagle Global Logistics) has signed a definitive merger agreement under which James R. Crane, EGL’s largest shareholder, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, together with investment funds affiliated with Centerbridge Partners, L.P. and The Woodbridge Company Limited (”Investor Group”) will acquire the Company in a transaction valued at approximately $1.7 billion.

Integration of Schenker and Bax proceeds in Asia Pacific

Further news on the progress of the integration of Schenker and Bax Global has been released. The two logistics and forwarding operations are subsidiaries of German-based DB Logistics which in turn is part of the German state owned national rail operator. Following the acquisition of Bax Global by Deutsche Bahn in 2005, there have been moves to bring the two companies together under the Schenker brand.

TNT completes sale of freight management business

Samskip acquires Saltire Integrated Shipping Limited

Samskip Limited has acquired Glasgow-based Saltire Integrated Shipping Limited. Sandy Valentine and Peter Work. the two shareholders of Saltire, a freight forwarding and NVOCC operator formed in 2004, have sold their business to Samskip Limited for an undisclosed amount.

Maersk-Hapag: If you cannot beat them, buy them!

The international investment bank Dresdner Kleinwort upgraded the Maersk share and thus sent the investors a clear message to keep their Maersk shares instead of selling them, which was earlier the bank’s recommendation. On the other hand, speculations of a possible take-over of Hapag Lloyd are increasing.

Speculation grows over new bid by Maersk on TUI

Once again rumours are emerging that container shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk is set to buy diversified German transport and tourism operator TUI. This speculation has been doing the rounds for at least six months, but it has had sufficient momentum to push TUI’s share price over 5% higher over the past week.

More rumours on Schenker’s European acquisition plans

More rumours have emerged over Deutsche Bahn/Schenker’s plans for expansion by acquisition. Reports in the FT Deutschland, quoting amongst others Hans-Joerg Hager, Managing Director of Schenker AG, claim that Schenker is planning acquisitions in Spain or Portugal, Britain and Italy. These sources state that Deutsche Bahn/Schenker will spend around ?1 billion on these acquisitions.

FedEx Buys a British Express Company

FedEx bought ANC Holdings Ltd for $237 million. ANC offers a range of distribution and logistics services within its U.K. pickup and delivery network. It has 4,500 employees, a fleet of 2,200 vehicles and serves the country from 80 locations. Move is seen as a strategic step by the package delivery company to reenter the domestic European express market.
